Amigos.com has been designed to target the Latin dating market. Although the site does score rather well in most areas that doesn't mean it doesn't have its limitations, as well. We'll tell you straightaway that the biggest drawback is that before you pay, your ability to experience one of the most important features of any site is rather limited on this particular one. Nevertheless, after we've described what you do get on the site, despite not enjoying a complete test drive beforehand, you might decide to join anyway.

We'll start with something positive about Amigos, although that all depends on where you live. If you live in the United States you can search profiles free by zip code. If you live outside the US, including any of you living in Canada, you'll need to upgrade your membership in order to do localized searches based on your local cities. Otherwise, you can only search by country, state or province. You'll be able to see the last login dates on all your free search results, but we're about to come to the real problem for unpaid guests.

"Amigos does allow free members to initiate contact with the premium members who paid extra money for 'standard contacts' and reply without limitation to their emails."

You might be able to see a few members' full profiles, but it's completely hit or miss. It seems that only if someone has paid a special fee in addition to their premium subscription will you be able to view their full details, and even then you won't be allowed to see any of their additional photos. There's another way you might gain access to viewing profiles: If your own profile garners enough attention, you can earn special viewing privileges.

Amigos does allow free members to initiate contact with the premium members who paid extra money for "standard contacts" and reply without limitation to their emails. However, it limits the free subscribers to 10 emails per 24-hour period. It does seem that without paying any additional money, as a premium subscriber your emails can be responded to by all levels of members, even those who haven't upgraded.

Contact options and community interaction on the site is extensive. There's email, of course, but there are also chat rooms and instant messaging, both of which can be used by free members, although free access might have a certain daily usage limit. There are personal blogs and a magazine with member-submitted articles. The "groups" section of the site is really just an interactive message board system.

The two best things about the site are what might change your mind about joining even if the site is best enjoyed by upgrading your membership. Amigos continues to attract a healthy number of visitors to its pages and is bargain priced compared to many other online dating sites.

I did not like the Gold Member service. First, my preference settings, once entered, continually scrambled, resulting in enormous time waste and inaccurate profile settings. Second, despite becoming a paying Gold member, the Standard member women, which are the majority of women on there couldn t email me. So you pay, then you find out you must pay an additional amount, and on and on.
